  • Cryosurgery is the application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue. In animals, the technique is used to treat tumors in locations where conventional surgery would be difficult or impossible. Cryosurgery is sometimes also used for the removal of aberrant or extra eyelashes (distichiasis).

  • Hospitals providing curbside care have restructured their practice to avoid the need for clients to enter the lobby and exam rooms. This measure was designed to promote physical (social) distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, it may be used in other situations. This handout discusses the benefits and best practices of curbside care.

  • Cutaneous papillomatosis is a condition in which papillomas (non-cancerous growths, or warts) develop due to papillomavirus. Commonly affected pet bird species include finches, canaries, cockatiels, budgerigars, and African gray parrots. The clinical signs and treatment for this condition are explained in this handout.

  • Cyclopentolate ophthalmic is an eye drop used in veterinary medicine during eye examinations to dilate the pupil and allow for proper examination of the interior part of the eye. It is used in all species of animals. Cyclopentolate ophthalmic comes in a liquid drop format to be instilled directly to the eye (topically).

  • Collecting tissue samples for cytology or histopathology allows a pathologist to often give a diagnosis of the type of mass or tumor your pet has. Samples can be obtained by fine needle aspirate or biopsy, where a piece of the mass is cut out. This handout outlines how these tests are used to help with diagnosis and treatment.

  • “Medicalese” is the “language” or specialized terminology of the medical and veterinary professions. This handout provides a starting point for understanding these terms, so that you can understand what your veterinarian is saying, and make good health care decisions for your pet.

  • Deslorelin (brand name Suprelorin-F®) is a synthetic hormonal agent used to manage adrenocortical disease in ferrets. Deslorelin has also been used as a temporary contraceptive in intact male dogs or ferrets, to suppress estrus in small mammals, to decrease reproductive behavior in pet birds, and to induce ovulation in horses. Caution when handling if pregnant or child-bearing age.

  • Dexamethasone ophthalmic is a topical steroid medication used to treat eye inflammation in cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, and other animals. Dexamethasone ophthalmic comes in ointment and liquid drop form that is given topically, directly into the eye.

  • Dexmedetomidine is a sedative and tranquilizer used in the treatment of fear and anxiety in dogs (Sileo) and as a sedative and pain medication in both dogs and cats (Dexdomitor). It is also used off label (extra label) as a pre-anesthetic or tranquilizer in exotic pets.

  • Diazepam (brand names: Valium®, Diastat®, E Pam Tab®, Meva®l, Vivol®) is used as a muscle relaxant, anti-anxiety medication, appetite stimulant, and an anti-seizure medication. It is also used as a preanesthetic in hospital. It is used off label to treat anxiety, seizures, tense muscles, or decreased appetite. Give as directed by your veterinarian.
